Fresh french fries in the air fryer – recipe

Fresh fries in the air fryer are healthier than in the deep fryer and tastier than frozen fries. You may think this is a lot of extra work because you can’t just open a bag. Yet that is not the case. It is ready relatively quickly.

What do you need to make fresh french fries in the air fryer?

Potatoes and a little sunflower oil or peanut oil, that’s all.

Potatoes for fries are large, which is ideal for cutting fresh fries. In addition, they have a high starch content which is ideal for frying chips. These are floury, crumbly potatoes such as Agria or Bintje.

How do you prepare the fresh french fries?

Peel the potatoes and rinse them. Then dry them. I use a kitchen towel for this. Now cut the potato into slices.

You can pat the slices dry with a kitchen towel. Place the slices on the cutting board and cut long strips from it. If the fries are too long, you can cut them in half.

If you don’t feel like cutting yourself, you can also use a French fries cutter.

Put all the fries in a bowl and add a tablespoon of sunflower oil. Put everything together well so that all fries are covered with the oil. If you have a large portion of fries, you can add a second tablespoon of oil.

How to bake fresh french fries in the air fryer?

Even though you can do a lot more with an air fryer, it was created to bake fries in a healthy way. That is why an air fryer also has a fries setting. With our air fryer, this is 20 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius or 392 degrees Fahrenheit.

Halfway through the preparation time, remove the bowl from the air fryer. You can now stir or shake the fries with a wooden spoon. Then you can slide the bowl back into the air fryer and the fries will continue to bake.

Keep in mind that this setting is especially ideal if you use the maximum amount. For our air fryer that is 1.2 kg. If you only make a small portion, your fries will be ready sooner. Therefore, make sure you shake the chips a bit earlier and take them out before they turn black.

Experiment with the amount and baking time. This way I know that with a small portion I can remove the fresh fries from the air fryer after just 13 minutes.

If you also want to bake your deep-fry snacks in the air fryer at the same time, check what time they need. For example, if that is 7 minutes, you open the air fryer 7 minutes before the fries are ready. Now you can just add the snacks and bake everything together. So everything will be warm at the same time.

I don’t like salt on the fries myself, but if you do, you can always add salt before or after baking.

Other way

That’s my way of frying the fresh french fries in the air fryer. Philips chef does things a little differently. He first puts the cut fries in cold water for half an hour to remove the excess starch so that it does not stick. That is not necessary for me because I like it better if it is a little darker.

He first bakes the fries for 10 minutes at 120 degrees Celsius (248 degrees Fahrenheit). Then he only adds a tablespoon of oil and bakes them for another 22 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit).
