Green smoothies are now consumed by half the world’s population, but red smoothies … that’s something else! And no, they do not necessarily have to consist of strawberries or other red fruit.
No, you can just put in some beetroot and huppa … the most intense red smoothie of all time.
For those who think the combination of beetroot and fruit sounds utterly distasteful … just try it once. Most people (I at first too) also looked strange from the combination of fruit and leafy vegetables like spinach. That has finally turned out positive, is not it? Meanwhile, we are buried under the smoothies with spinach.
I do not see why this would be different with beetroot.

In any case, the sweetness of the fruit will always dominate the taste of a smoothie. However, by adding vegetables such as spinach or beetroot, your drink gets added (nutritional) value. Not to mention the attractive colors. That is what they call a ‘win-win’ I believe 🙂
Of course, you have to cook the beetroot beforehand. How (and how long) you do that, you will read in this article. Or use pre-cooked beetroot if you have little time.
Furthermore, you can still experiment with the ingredients. For a creamier version, for example, you can add rice or almond milk instead of water. Instead of the apple, you can also process pear or mango in your smoothie. The list of options is endless.
For blending, we used a Nutribullet.

Beetroot smoothie

Ingredients
- 200 grams beetroot, cooked, in small cubes (or use 180 to 200 ml beetroot juice)
- 1 Banana, peeled and in pieces
- 1 apple, (large) - peeled, cored and removed in cubes
- 250 ml icecold water
- 2 dates without pit (optional for a sweeter taste) - coarsely chopped

Throw everything in the blender and mix at high speed.
Notes
This smoothie is - depending on how 'juicy' your beetroot is - fairly firm in texture. If you want a thinner smoothie, you can simply add more water.
