Sweet potato fries are something that is regularly on the table here. We used to make it in the oven, but since we bought an air fryer we make it there.
I ate sweet potato fries for the first time in the Vegan Junk Food Bar in Amsterdam. I took that as a side dish with the hot dog. And so we now regularly eat it as a sidedish when we make a hot dog or burger.
Another way we eat it is with grilled aubergine and a fresh salad. But you can also eat it as a snack in between or in the evening, with a nice dip.
Benefits of sweet potato fries in the air fryer
Sweet potato fries are ready faster in the air fryer than in the oven. On top of that, and perhaps the most important benefit, the sweet potato fries come out much crispier than if you bake them in the oven. It sometimes comes out flat in the oven. Also tasty, but with a little extra bite just that little bit better.
Preparation of sweet potato fries in the air fryer
It’s very easy to make and you don’t need much at all.
Peel and wash the sweet potatoes.
Depending on the size, you can eat one or more small ones. This also depends on whether you are going to eat it as a main course or as a small snack and of course also with how many people you will enjoy it. While cutting, you get a good idea of whether you want more or not. Keep in mind that the volume will decrease a bit once you’ve baked them.
Cut the sweet potato into slices and then these slices into fries. Try to cut the fries about the same thickness so that they are all cooked evenly. Otherwise you can expect that one is still raw while the other has already been baked black. Of course you don’t want that.
Place the sweet potato fries in a large bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of oil, for example olive oil. You can now also season the fries with a seasoning of your choice. We often alternate with this, just what we have at home or what fits with the rest of the dish.
The last time I made this I used barbecue herbs, garlic powder, smoked paprika and black paper. Another time it is with Provencal herbs. But you can also keep it basic and just take salt and pepper. If you want to give it an oriental touch, you can also try an oriental spice.
Mix everything well so that all sweet potato fries have a little oil and herbs around them.
Depending on the amount, thickness and which air fryer, the time can make a difference. I baked them for 15 minutes at 200 degrees. Check the air fryer fries every now and then to make sure they don’t turn black.
