In the past few weeks, I’ve been constantly seeing people making dalgona coffee on Instagram, including my sister-in-law. I’m not really into the trends myself, but as a food blogger, I was curious about this.
I tried it out this weekend. The weather was beautiful and my father was pulling some weeds in the front yard. So I wanted to provide him with a nice refreshment, so it seemed the ideal time to try out this new trend. He turned out to like it very much.
What is Dalgona coffee?
Dalgona coffee is very easy to make. You need an equal ratio of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water, eg 1 tablespoon of each. Then you beat it into a light foam. It can be done with a whisk but is easiest with an electric beater.
Dalgona coffee can be drunk hot or cold (mostly cold). So you take either hot or cold oat milk (I use Oatly Barista). If you want an iced coffee, put some ice cubes in the oat milk. On top, scoop the coffee foam.
You can now stir the foam into the milk and enjoy the iced coffee.
Where does Dalgona coffee suddenly come from?
I saw it on Instagram several times, but Dalgona coffee has gone viral on TikTok. Dalgona is originally from South Korea and is actually a caramel candy that you can buy on the street.
When the South Korean actor Jung II-Woo visited Macau (China region) he was served a coffee at a restaurant which reminded him of these candies. This is how the name Dalgona Coffee was born. He made this coffee on a TV show and then (since January 2020) it went viral.
I think this coffee has become so popular because of the simplicity of the recipe, and because everyone is at home in quarantine and wants something to do.
Is it worth the hype? Actually yes. I have drunk it a few times now and love it, my father too. In addition, it is made quickly and you don’t need any special ingredients.
Have you already made the Dalgona coffee or are you going to try it? Let me know at the bottom of this page in a comment.
